So today I deleted Aomei, Acrosync and NetBak Replicator and bought myself a copy of SyncBackSE. If there's an error, I want to the program to tell exactly what it is, either by the error message telling me or linking me to somewhere which does, and what I can do to remedy it.
There were two things I didn't like about NetBak, and they were the HTML interface which couldn't be moved or resized, the other was the error messages about something being incompatible with something else, or something to that effect. Of the two I sort of drifted to the latter. That left me with Qnap's NetBak Replicator and SyncBackFree. Well, I didn't get any further with Aomei and Acrosync, not because of lack of interest, but of time and energy to learn the ins and outs (a lot of the time was spent recovering lost data from a cloud backup system I subscribe to and putting together a new computer and dismantling and rebuilding the old computer). Just thought I'd tell people of the result (or rather non-result) of a week or so of trying the three or four backup candidates. SynckBack simply copied ”Opera” to Qnap > Multimedia > Opera. For my ”Opera” files it’s posting them to: Qnap > Multimedia > Netbakdata > Disk N > Opera Bit too complicated. It creates multi-layered folders in the destination folder. NetBak Replicator: Nearly as easy as SyncBack.
Option to channel through an SSH channel - useful if you know what an SSH channel is. Placing the mouse pointer on ”upload” it tells you it means syncing from local to remote directory Wants to know the port number (?). Haven’t a clue what to put in the dialog window/box Acrosync has a useful information pop-up thing. Under the SSH mode the dialog will start with the home directory by default”. The only option it’s pointing to Index_default.html whatever that is It says ”click to select the remote directory using a directory browsing dialog. File selection window can expand, but it doesn’t remember so you have to expand it every time Not easy to find ”remote directory”.
Acrosync: Have to plot in server username, password etc.
Completed a full backup of my ”Orchestral” file in a bit over 2 hours, 569GB and 16 thousand odd files. Dead easy to set up - it finds the Qnap itself - no fiddling with ports and html numbers. Bye bye Aomei SyncBack: Absolutely no hassle. I haven’t got the time or patience to fiddle with it. Be useful if it could do an automatic search. Big disadvantage you have to enter ”share or NAS path”, which is always a pain if it’s not stored in your head. Aomei Backupper: can’t expand file selection window to full screen. I can't upload it because it has an invalid file extension apparently. I've noted down my first comparative impressions of Aomei Backupper, SyncBack, Acrosync and NetBak Replicator in a Word 2007 document.
